Around fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.

Law enforcement state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.

The liquid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.

Law enforcement then found multiple other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.

Officials report preliminary tests indicate the liquid was likely blood from a person.

"There is still no clue as to its origin; investigators are not yet informed of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.

Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to solve the case" and have asked to the community for tips.

An important official stated the incident left him without words and required to be addressed rapidly.

"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, recalling the death of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
