This Supernatural Story
Soderbergh pushes his film-making abilities in this nifty paranormal narrative filmed completely from the viewpoint of the phantom. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their recent residence, the filming device – as the unseen entity – follows them around. Chloe seems aware of the poltergeist, and the entity appears protective of her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that remains concise, with a twist that could catch you off guard. This Creepy Thriller
Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror stands strong even without a follow-up. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, several disappearances has rendered the children anxious. When Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and held captive in a cellar, he dreads the worst. But the non-functional line on the wall continues to ring, with spooky callers providing assistance, and the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the battle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for Mammon in this director's wonderfully garish biopic of the disgraced TV preacher and her felon spouse. The actor acts as the greedy Jim, who states at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals set about capitalizing on the American public's religious faith. It's a spectacle of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, yet Chastain succeeds to present the character in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, on Film4
