An underground economy for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to recent findings.
Investigational Drug Gaining Popularity Via Social Media
The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed weight-reducing effects. Viewers are urged to contact these accounts privately for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.
Thriving Trade on Social Networks
Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Sellers promote the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for transactions.
Understanding Retatrutide
This medication is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist patients reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns
However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could result in users administering products of unknown origin.
Some experts said the demand for retatrutide could be connected to the rising cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Legal Status and Implementation
Selling retatrutide on social media or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be promoted or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several content creators try to circumvent the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but advertising and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer laws, risking penalties, prosecution or prison.
Platform Response and Content Elimination
According to the social media company, the platform has removed violative material and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform safe and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Online Trading Operations
Investigations also discovered groups with up to 9,000 members selling the experimental drug using the platform's built-in search feature, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of users, filled with images of weight loss, positive testimonials and detailed instructions for preparing or administering at home.
After minutes of joining one group, a seller shared contact information, where most transactions take place. The vendor provided an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within two days. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a alleged testing documentation. None inquired about body mass, health issues or past usage.
Product Details and Pricing
Within these groups, posts show dark colored parcels with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to include new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors usually priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a pen should be used, vendors give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Safety Actions
A spokesperson for Telegram said it regularly moderated dangerous material on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Professional Warnings
“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind this drug is sound, these online products may not contain what they claim,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
A medical professional of an online medical service linked the increase in demand to recent cost increases for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.
Her staff has already seen patients injured by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Statement
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been evaluated or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet approved … may expose users to potentially serious health risks”.
