Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
